Locked down Scots students 'make most of bad situation' as they self-isolate at Covid stricken halls

Students were last night trying to make the most of a bad situation after going into self-isolation amid a spike in coronavirus cases at universities.

Many have had the start of their academic years ruined but are taking the setback in their stride.

The Daily Record spoke to some students at University of Glasgow’s Murano Student Village yesterday.

First year art history student Flory Speed, 17, from Perthshire, had been holed up with three other students, and one has tested positive.

Another pal has already gone home.

She said: “This was all kind of inevitable but it is a shock to the system. For the next few days I’m literally going to be trapped in my bedroom.

“I have got six days left of proper isolation. Although I’m not affected physically, I think there’s a psychological effect.”

Politics and sociology student Alice Jones, 19, from London, added: “This is bizarre. We can’t go out. At the beginning, I was a bit upset but I’m getting on with it.

“The university are doing their best but this isn’t the student experience we expected. I don’t know how much longer I can put up with this.”

Meanwhile, a mum who turned up at the student housing yesterday to bring an “aid package” to her daughter expressed her fears.

Janette Speed, a lawyer, said: “It’s just like a catalogue of things that they’re missing out on, these milestones in their life.

“It may be the case legally that their human rights are being imposed on but there are bigger fish to fry in society.

“Maybe we’ve just got to suck it up and get through this.”
