Lockdown travel restrictions Ireland: Driver spins over 100km outside limit with awful excuse as Gardai rage at checkpoint

One driver was caught 100km from home and not on an essential journey by Gardai in Kildare yesterday as another whole host of fines were issued to rule-breaking motorists on 'Blue Monday'.

The restriction buster had absolutely no excuse for officers and was immediately hit with a €100 fine.

Roads Policing Unit Naas on Operation Fanacht accompanied by the Road Safety Authority performed checkpoints in Monasterevin and Kilcock where a total of five vehicles were seized.

Four of these vehicles were seized from unaccompanied learner permit holders with no L plates displayed as Gardai handed out fines of €125, €140 respectively and three penalty points.

One vehicle was seized for non-display of tax and had not had the necessary certificate for 1,023 days.

While another motorist was also arrested for drug driving after cocaine was detected in their system with a court day coming up for them.

Gardai said: "We would like to like to thank the public for its cooperation during this operation."

On Sunday, Gardai in Kildare stopped a car on the M7 in Newbridge and discovered that the occupants had departed from the Cork area and had no proper excuse for their journey.

In a post online, they said: "Naas Roads Policing Unit stopped this car on the M7 in Newbridge last night. Occupants were discovered to be on a non-essential journey from the Cork area and Fixed Charge Notices were issued to both.

"The car was also seized as driver had no insurance."
