Lockdown travel Ireland: Driver brings Gardai on big chase as rash Blanchardstown checkpoint U-turn leads to arrest

One man was arrested in his car in relation to money laundering offences after turning away from a west Dublin Garda checkpoint.

The man, in his 40s, came on Gardai's radar when the car he was in tried to do a U-turn at a Blanchardstown Covid stop but officers made a stark discovery after chasing the vehicle in question.

Policing Units in the area were conducting the checkpoint at Waterville Road shortly after 1:30pm on Monday when they spotted the car that fled the scene.

Quick-working Gardai intercepted the vehicle and conducted a follow-up search finding cigarettes worth €20,000 and €4,200 in cash.

The arrested man was questioned at Blanchardstown Garda Station but was released without charge.

A Garda spokesman told Dublin Live: "A file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The investigation is ongoing."
