Lockdown success story as newly opened Irish takeaway prompts lengthy queues and runs out of food

A newly opened Indian takeaway in Co Kildare has "exploded" onto the scene on its first weekend with queues of people lining up to get a taste.

The Smokin' Goat opened in Celbridge on Friday at 4pm and was closed by 8pm after running out of meat such was the unforeseen demand.

Pictures also surfaced of (socially-distanced) queues right around the corner of their new spot beside Tesco in the bustling town.

And owners Raj and Jennifer Yadav, both 39, along with chef and principal partner AJ Malhan, 35, have been blown away by the demand.

The partners opened a similar restaurant in May in Bray called the Curry Leaf which has also been a huge success.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Raj said: "We have been getting a lot of footfall, it's been very overwhelming.

"We opened for our first day on Friday at 4pm and were closed by 8pm nearly, we had run out of meat.

"We are busier than we ever expected, getting over 100 orders and we only have so much capacity."

Originally from Delhi, India Raj said that when the pandemic hit last year, he wanted to do something and not just be sitting around, which prompted his foray into restaurants.

He added: "We opened up the Curry Leaf at the Strand Hotel on May 15 2020. Because of 2020 and what happened we didn't want to sit at home, we are the type of people who need to be doing something.

"And it was a great success.

"After a month or two we were fully engaged with it and then this property in Celbridge came up, Jennifer is born and bred here and we knew the area so said we'd try open up as quickly as possible.

"We made it an open kitchen so people can see the food being made even from outside which people love."

And Raj said it's a real success story and something to be positive about during a difficult time.

The Smokin' Goat has performed so well on its opening weekend that they are even looking to hire 12 staff already.

The owner added: "We would have had no income from our other businesses when lockdowns came but now we have two Indian businesses operating successfully.

"So it really is a good story during a difficult time.

"We've gone to Indeed this morning looking for more staff because the place has just exploded."

The newly opened restaurant specialises in Middle Eastern and Asian cuisine.
