Lockdown should go back to the rules from March or get even tougher, warns scientist

The country should return to the strict lockdown restrictions of March - or get even tighter, a behaviour expert has warned.

Professor Susan Michie, an adviser on the Government’s Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviours, has said a stricter lockdown would also mean a shorter lockdown.

She described nurseries and places of worship, which are both allowed to remain open during lockdown, as “super spreading” events and that she has received many emails from people who are “really distraught” about going to work.

On what restrictions she would like to see, Prof Michie told Times Radio: “Do what we did in March but consider are there other things we could tighten.

“The better the lockdown is now the shorter it will be.

“I think we should throw everything we can at really driving transmission down to a low level.

“Make a really effective test, trace and isolate system so when inevitable outbreaks occur there’s a system there that can manage it and prevent it getting out of control again.”

Her view is supported by Chronicle Live readers.

In our latest survey, we asked you what you thought of the current rules. A total of 6,967 people responded, with 72% saying we do need a tougher lockdown.

Masks outside, closed nurseries and tighter rules for supermarket shoppers were among the beefed-up rules you wanted to see.

However, people also thought individuals must take more responsibility as well.

Whether or not they think the rules need to change, most (90%) also think individuals need to do more to follow the existing regulations.
