Lockdown shopping Ireland: World Health Organisation advice for Penneys, Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Dunnes and more

The World Health Organisation advise shoppers to take a number of precautions when shopping.

The latest easing of Level 5 restrictions will see all retail, non-essential or otherwise, fully opening to customers.

Stores were previously only allowed to open for click-and-collect or on an appointment basis.

However, outlets will still be expected to follow public health guidelines including wearing masks, following social distancing, and providing hand sanitiser.

The WHO doesn't see shopping as high risk but does have some advice as to how you can keep your risk of contracting the virus low.

An expert said: "When shopping, keep at least 1-metre distance from others and avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose. If possible, sanitize the handles of shopping trolleys or baskets before shopping.

"Once home, wash your hands thoroughly and also after handling and storing your purchased products.

"There is currently no confirmed case of COVID-19 transmitted through food or food packaging."

When it comes to fresh fruit and vegetables, you are recommended to wash them but no differently to normal.

The expert added: "Fruits and vegetables are important components of a healthy diet. Wash them the same way you should do under any circumstance: before handling them, wash your hands with soap and water. Then, wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly with clean water, especially if you eat them raw."

Last week saw a number of lockdown restrictions being lifted including the return of hairdressers/barbers/beauticians, inter-county travel, sports training for adults, vaccinated households being able to meet indoors, and more.

Here is what to expect over the course of May and June:

On May 17:

  • The mass reopening of non-essential retail

On June 2:

  • Hotels will be allowed to reopen, with the bonus for guests able to eat meals like their breakfast inside

On June 7:

  • All pubs and restaurants allowed to open again to serve, but only outdoors initially
  • Gyms and swimming pools will reopen
  • Any household can visit one other

  • Amateur sports matches are back on

  • Guests at wedding receptions up to 25

  • Cinemas and theatres to reopen
