Lockdown shopping Ireland: Dublin Penneys madness as hundreds wait for hours in 24-hour Dundrum queue

These were the bizarre scenes at Penneys in Dundrum Town Centre as hundreds formed a massive queue at the recently reopened 24-hour store before midnight last night.

Shoppers lined up for miles in the cold last night as two Dublin Penneys remained open all night for the first time ever.

Eager shoppers pulling the all-nighter such as Alan Devane and Shane Coppinger thought they would be smart by leaving it late - or early, how ever you look at it - to pick up a few bits.

But they were mistaken as the insanely long lines filtered around the packed car park in Dundrum.

Alan told Dublin Live: "We went to Dundrum and thought we would beat the crowd but the queues were gargantuan.

"Our friend John had asked us to get him a new wallet because he's always losing his but he'll have to wait until later in the week."

Shopping fanatic Shane added: "We had such plans for a long midnight stroll around the shop but that idea got canned sadly.

"I wanted to see if I could get some pyjamas for my friend Pat, he's had the same reindeer ones for the last decade, they have holes in them and all - the lad is 25 like."

The long lines of bargain fans also braved the harsh Winter cold at Blanchardstown Shopping Centre too, the second 24-hour store.

One woman whose sister thought she could skip the crowds at 9pm was left sadly mistaken.

She told Dublin Live: "I think people were thinking it would be a bit quieter if they went up later, my sister was there at 9pm and said it was mental."

Many commenters online shared their shock at the scenes with some joking "there'll be feck all left by the time I get there!".

But others were not quite as impressed by the long queues, and shared their dismay at seeing such crowds only hours after the lifting of Level 5 restrictions in Ireland.
