Lockdown rules on visiting beaches as East Lothian warns tourists to stay away at Easter

As Easter weekend approaches, the celebration coincides with the relaxation of lockdown rules, meaning the law changes from 'stay at home' to 'stay local'.

This will mean that it is no longer law for you to stay in your home, unless you are leaving for an essential purpose.

It also comes as some outdoor rules have been relaxed, with up to four people from two different households able to meet together in the fresh air.

With new 'stay local' rule applying from April 2., (Good Friday), weather across Edinburgh and the Lothians is also expected to become milder at the weekend.

Forecasts have predicted Friday will see a mix of sunshine and cloud, with highs of 10 degrees. However on Saturday (April 3), the weather should see clear sunny skies and highs of a mild 13 degrees.

But as restrictions ease and temperatures climb, some local towns and beauty spots have urged those enjoying the long weekend to stay away to avoid overcrowding.

With areas such as Portobello beach crammed on some days during lockdown last year, East Lothian council have actively warned locals not to travel through from Edinburgh to visit their beaches.

The council stated that East Lothian saw record numbers of visitors during 2020, and added that visitors had caused disruption through inconsiderate parking, wild camping, open fires and a lack of social distancing.

Speaking about their concerns, East Lothian Council’s Head of Infrastructure, Tom Reid, said: We look forward to warmly welcoming visitors back when it is safe to do so. But at this time we’re afraid it’s not possible.

“The remit of the Working Group is to consider and put into place a range of measures to advise local residents and people from out with East Lothian tempted to visit beaches and other countryside sites about current guidance."

With many people now confused about the meaning and rules behing 'stay local' for this weekend, Edinburgh Live has provided a full explainer below.

What are the new 'stay local' rules?

Coming into force on April 2, the 'stay local' rule means Scottish people can travel inside their local authority area without an essential purpose.

Although still being asked to minimise their journeys, residents are completely within their right to visit beauty spots or beaches within their area.

However, for those living in Edinburgh, the new rule does not allow for people to travel into neighbouring authorities, such as East Lothian of West Lothian unless it is for an essential reason such as work.

If searching for a walking route or spot to visit for the Easter weekend, locals must do so within their council area.

Although allowed to move around inside their area and mix with one other household outdoors, locals have also been asked to be mindful of the rules and avoid any unnecessary interaction with others.
