Lockdown rules in Scotland that now differ from England

Lockdown rules for Scotland and England now differ significantly for the first time.

Last night Prime Minister Boris Johnson relaxed several restrictions, allowing people to undertake "unlimited exercise" and encouraging many to return to work.

But the changes, which come into force on Wednesday, will NOT apply in Scotland, after Nicola Sturgeon eased the restriction on just a single rule yesterday.

The First Minister also rejected the UK Government's new 'Stay Alert' message insisting the 'Stay at Home' warning remains firmly in place north of the border.

Here's how Scotland's rules differ from England's.

You can now exercise more than once a day

From today the once a day limit on exercise has been lifted in Scotland.

But that's the ONLY change we can take advantage off.

People must stay local, begin and end at home and not involve going a distance to start.

You must also exercise alone or in your household group and remain two meters away from anyone else.

Those shielding must also remain indoors.

In comparison people in England can drive to other areas for unlimited exercise, they can also play outdoor spots with members of their household and sunbathe in parks and beaches.

Garden centres

The Scottish Government is examining the prospect of allowing garden centres to reopen, but for now they must remain closed.

Nicola Sturgeon told the country yesterday she hopes to have more information on this next weekend.

In England they will reopen from Wednesday, with the two meter social distancing rules applied.

Recycling centres

This is another area the Scottish Government is hoping to announce changes too next weekend. Ms Sturgeon announced at yesterday's briefing that they're hoping to put a plan in place to allow them to open soon. Again, for now they remain closed.

England will reopen it's recycling centres this week.

Work

There's no change to the current rules in Scotland, so don't do anything different.

However, it's a different story in England where the Prime Minister told anyone who can't work from home, including those in construction and manufacturing, the should "be actively encouraged to go to work" from today.

He said the government would set out how workplaces can become "Covid-secure" by following new guidance for employers.

But those who can work at home should continue to do so.

Lastly, those who fail to follow the guidelines could see financial penalties increased in order to enforce the social distancing rules.
