Lockdown rule breakers dump BBQ and leave litter sprawled acoss Leeds quarry

Residents were shocked after a group of people broke lockdown rules to have a barbecue at a local landmark - and left the place covered in rubbish.

Pictures showed Woodside Quarry littered with leftovers from a barbecue, including empty sauce bottles, used paper plates and cups - and even the barbecue grill itself.

The mess was spotted on Tuesday (May 26) afternoon by resident Zoe Nicholson, who was shocked at the amount of litter left across the entire quarry.

She told LeedsLive : "I was on a simple peaceful walk with my brother, and just came across a barbecue with rubbish scattered everywhere, paper plates, plastic cups etc, due to it being slightly windy.  The rubbish was blown across the entire quarry."

Early on Wednesday morning residents living nearby set out to clean up the quarry.

This included Mand Turner, who helped clean up with her children Evie, Jacob and Olivia at 7.30am. The children were so eager to clean, they set out to the quarry before they'd even had their breakfast.

Mand said: "We live across the road from the quarry, at the area where the woods are. At the moment, we're going there quite a lot for daily walks, but I've been going there for years.

"When I saw those photos of the quarry in that state it was awful - especially the fact it wasn't just one place, it was all over the quarry. It was really sad to see, this is a place we're lucky to have on our doorstep.

"My little sister is a very keen environmentalist, she often goes around the woods to clean them up, and that's rubbed off on us a little bit. We said we'd go down with some bin liners and pick up what we can, and we ended up getting nine bags full of rubbish.

"And rubbish was everywhere. On one side there was an actual barbecue next to disposable ones, empty lucozade bottles, used paper plates, nappies and wipes everywhere. On the other there were smashed up cans and bottles of alcohol, it was all over.

"I saw a few groups of people getting stuck in and cleaning this morning. I'm really proud of my kids for wanting to help out - we went down around 7.15, before they'd even had breakfast, but they didn't moan about it. I made them all a bacon butty when we got back!"
