Lockdown restrictions are eased as people enjoy haircuts, holidays and a visit to the pub

People in West Lothian took full advantage of lockdown restrictions being eased this week.

The country has entered phase three, which saw the reopening of hair salons, holiday accommodation, places of worship and museums and the chance to enjoy a pint and something to eat inside local pubs and restaurants.

On Wednesday hair salons and barbers welcomed customers while popular tourist attraction The Almond Valley Heritage Centre also reopened for visitors.

Face coverings are now compulsory in stores but that did not stop shoppers flocking to newly-opened malls, including The Centre Livingston and nearby Livingston Designer Outlet.

Shoppers turned up in their droves on Monday when The Centre Livngston reopened its doors after nearly four months in lockdown.

Centre director Patrick Robbertze said it was “fantastic” to see so many shoppers return to the mall, adding there was a real buzz in the air.

He added: “There’s a few changes in the mall following Scottish Government guidelines including safe distancing measures and enhanced cleaning regimes.

“Our teams have worked really hard to make sure every visitor has a safe and fantastic shopping experience when they get here.”

The mall had remained partially open since March for essential stores including the M&S food hall, Boots and banks.

Staff will now be wearing visors and face coverings to help people who rely on lip reading. The face coverings were designed by West Lothian-born Gavin McAdam, founder of Breathe Easy.

Cathy Muldoon, West Lothian’s Executive councillor for development and transport said: “We are delighted that non-essential shops in The Centre are able to safely re-open to shoppers once more.

“Retail is an important part of West Lothian’s diverse economy, providing valuable jobs for local families.”

Staff at Almond Valley Heritage Centre said they were delighted to open for visitors again.

A spokesperson said: “Advance booking will be essential to limit visitor numbers, many other arrangements will be in place to ensure social distancing and we’re thoroughly cleaning everything on a regular basis.

“Things will be rather different to they way they were before. Some features remain closed but there’s still loads to see and enjoy among the wide open spaces of our big green site.”

The West Lothian Military Museum said it will reopen tomorrow with new exhibits.
