Lockdown rebels caught travelling 550 miles to Scotland to collect dog

Police have fined a family of four who were caught attempting a 550-mile round journey to collect the family dog in Scotland.

Officers from Cumbria Roads Police stopped the Renault Megane near Junction 43 on the M6 in the north of England at the weekend.

They found the family, who had travelled from Halifax in West Yorkshire, as they attempted to drive to Cupar in Fife to retrieve the pet from another family member.

The police unit tweeted: “Family of 4 stopped northbound at J43 M6, travelling from Halifax to Cupar, Scotland to collect the family dog.

“The dog being in the care of another family member.

"Fine issued and escorted south. 2091/2378.”

Cumbria Roads Police have stopped several travellers flouting the lockdown restrictions in recent weeks.

On Thursday last week, they caught a Scots driver as he made a 524-mile round trip to collect a new car in Stafford, West Midlands.

He was driving from his home in Glasgow but was rumbled shortly after crossing the border into England.

The driver was fined for making the non-essential journey in breach of emergency coronavirus legislation.

On Sunday, the same force also snared a London man attempting to drive more than 500 miles to visit a cousin in Aberdeen.

And another driver was stopped in his tracks travelling from Birmingham to Glasgow to collect a designer handbag on May 5.

Officers pulled the vehicle over after it was caught allegedly driving at 100mph near Killington Lake Service Station.

The driver told the police he had made the journey to collect the Dior handbag and was speeding due to his passenger being unwell and wanting to get home faster.

The driver has now been reported for alleged speeding and travelling while uninsured as well as breaking lockdown restrictions.

As a result of the lack of insurance the car was seized and the occupants were forced to take a two-and-a-half hour taxi back to Birmingham.
