Lockdown: Over half of people in South West felt supermarket trip 'vital' to combat isolation

More than 50 per cent of people in a regional survey revealed that their weekly shop was vital to combat lockdown isolation.

Research carried out by retail technology pioneers Ubamarket found that 52 per cent of people in the South West said their weekly shop at their local supermarket was essential to combating isolation.

This comes as the Government's three tier system has resulted in more restrictions including a ban on social mixing indoors and in private gardens as well as closing gyms, bars and pubs in some areas.

All of the South West is rated Medium with the majority of the North being rated High according to the Government's website and tier ratings.

Will Broome, CEO and Founder of Ubamarket, said: "The Coronavirus pandemic has highlighted exactly how important local shops and supermarkets are to consumers across the country. With 50 per cent of Brits combating isolation and finding much-needed relief when doing their weekly shop, the centrality of supermarkets has never been clearer."

How did you combat isolation in lockdown? Did the weekly shop help you? What else did you do? Let us know in the comments below.

Throughout the pandemic various big-name supermarkets have operated differently introducing varying social distancing measures such as one-way systems.

The likes of Aldi and Tesco have also introduced a traffic light system which shows shoppers when they are able to enter the store and when they are not depending on the number of people inside at one time.
