Lockdown lifts in Townsville, so where in North Queensland can you travel these school holidays?

A week in to school holidays and some restrictions will remain. (ABC North Qld: Chloe Chomicki)

Lockdowns have been lifted across Townsville and Magnetic Island, but as the second week of school holidays begins, restrictions remain in place across the state.

Here is what you need to know about what you can do and where you can go.

When do I need to wear a mask in NQ?

If you have been to Townsville, Magnetic Island, or Palm Island since 6:00pm on Tuesday June 29 you have to carry a mask at all times when leaving home.

The only times when you do not have to wear a mask:

  • If you are alone in your car or with members of you household
  • If you are eating or drinking
  • If you are at your usual workplace and can physically distance from others, except if you work in a hospitality venue or are a passenger transport operator
  • If you are exercising outside with your household
  • If it is unsafe

Where can I travel to?

If you are in Townsville or Magnetic Island you can now leave your home for any reason.

But, you must wear a face mask wherever you go in the state.

This means you can still go on your school holiday road trip, but travellers are being advised to book ahead — especially if you are heading west.

Ferry services are also back up and running regularly to and from Magnetic Island.

Up to 17 ferry services a day are now operating again between Townsville and Magnetic Island. (ABC North Qld: Hannah Kotaidis)

There is currently no passenger ferry service to Palm Island due to an extension of protection measures on the Island, although a service will operate from Palm Island to Townsville at 2:00pm on Monday.

Testing sites still in full swing

About 1,500 people were tested by Townsville Hospital and Health Service over the weekend, including 600 people on Magnetic Island.

Chief Executive Kieran Keyes said it was vital people continue to come forward for testing.
