Lockdown level 4 begins for more than two million people in Glasgow and west central Scotland

More than two million Scots are today starting three weeks of strict coronavirus restrictions in an attempt to get the virus under control.

Eleven council areas including Glasgow were put in the top "level 4" measures - the highest in Scotland's alert system.

It comes with a new legal ban on travelling outside affected council areas without essential reasons such as for care or vital work.

Yesterday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the decision was "difficult" but justified.

Another 50 people had died in a single day in Scotland after testing positive for Covid-19, Sturgeon warned.

The latest infection figures showed 1089 new cases despite weeks of tighter controls after a brief loosening of the rules at the end of summer.

The level four rules cover Glasgow city, Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, East Dunbartonshire, West Dunbartonshire, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire, South Ayrshire Stirling and West Lothian.

Sturgeon said: "In the situation we face, in common with much of the rest of the world, the job of government must be to do what is necessary to save lives and protect health, even when we know these decisions will not be welcome."

The First Minister said the tough approach is "necessary to reduce the loss of life and serious illness".

Sturgeon hopes the rules, if successful, will help Scots mix more at Christmas just five weeks from now. She's in talks with other UK leaders to work out a plan which suits everyone.

"We discussed the Christmas period and how we can come to a sensible, and I stress sensible, and safe plan that will allow people not 100% normality but a greater degree of normality and in particular the ability to spend some time with loved ones," she said.
