Lockdown Ireland: Rulebreaking Dublin driver has car seized at Garda checkpoint after travelling just 20km outside limit

A Dublin Covid rulebreaker who was driving a car that had no tax on it for almost one full year had their vehicle seized at a Garda checkpoint after travelling just over 20km outside their limits.

Officers on the beat in Finglas were on guard in the Meakstown area on Monday when they spotted a vehicle driving suspiciously.

Using a mobility device, they were able to find out immediately that the vehicle in question had been out of tax for 11 months.

They stopped the driver and quizzed them about their trip who told Gardai that they had travelled over 12 miles away from home for no valid reason.

When asked for an excuse, the driver had none as officers started the seizure process in the late hours of yesterday.

Proceedings have started against the restriction breaching driver with Gardai once again urging people to follow the rules.

A spokesman said: "Community Gardaí Finglas were on Mobile Patrol in the Meakstown area when, using a mobility device, they discovered a vehicle that was out of tax for 11 months.

"Gardaí also discovered that the driver lived over 20km away and had no reasonable excuse for being in the area.

"The vehicle was subsequently seized under section 41 of the road traffic act."

They added: "Proceedings have now commenced against the driver for breaching restrictions.

"Gardaí want to remind people of the importance of following the level 5 restrictions."
