Lockdown Ireland: Eamon Ryan optimistic that inter-county travel will return within weeks

Green Party leader Eamon Ryan hopes inter-county travel will be allowed to happen as soon as the hospitality sector reopens.

It comes ahead of decision being made by Government this evening and an address to the nation from the Taoiseach tomorrow evening.

Mr Ryan noted that they will need to listen to the advice of NPHET - but said he is 'hopeful' of inter-county travel being given the green light for June.

The Green Party leader said: "The main thing I expect, we've a Cabinet sub-committee meeting this evening and we'll be getting the latest health advice and update for May 4th. We've been signalling for a long time that it'll be personal services coming back, thank god, all other construction works, church services and so on.

"I think what's worked in the last few months is where its been staged - for example, the return of golf and stuff earlier this week. I believe it'll be the same as that, a staged reopening."

When asked as to when he could see that reopening starting, Mr Ryan was optimistic.

He added: "We hope we can get hospitality back in June and domestic tourism can come back. I think that's something we're keen to do. Even that, it could be a staged basis, so it could be outside dining first and then indoor at a later stage.

"The way the numbers are going, they're relatively steady and with the vaccine rollout there's an opportunity to open the country more.

"Included in that will be aviation, we will introduced a mechanism where vaccinated people will be able to avoid quarantine upon their return to Ireland so that'll make a major difference.

"Opening up hospitality goes together with inter-county travel so that'll hopefully be June."
