Lockdown in Wales extended for second time as cases 'shift in wrong direction'

Lockdown restrictions in Caerphilly, in Wales, are being extended once again, after cases continue to rise.

This will be the second time that the Caerphilly council have announced measures will be extended for a further week.

The local lockdown news comes after the council say they cannot assure with "absolute confidence" that transmission of the virus is under control.

Wales Online report, that there are currently 16 areas in Wales in local lockdown, with Caerphilly being the first local lockdown put in place a month ago.

Caerphilly was placed in to lockdown when cases in the county were at a rate of 55.4 cases per 100,000 population.

Recent daily statistics show an increase in the infection rate to 60.2 cases per 100,000 population.

In an open letter to residents, businesses and partners across the Caerphilly county borough, the council said: "Last week we advised you that the number of coronavirus cases across the county borough had fallen from over 100 cases per 100,000 population to approximately 50 cases per 100,000.

"This was encouraging news and was the result of the collective action of our residents, businesses and partners. In response to this positive position, you will recall that we agreed to develop our exit strategy with Welsh Government.

"We can only implement these plans once we have absolute confidence that the virus is under control and it is safe for us to begin to relax the restrictions. This is a fast-moving situation and over the past few days we have seen a shift in the data.

"Unfortunately it is a shift in the wrong direction with the latest data showing an increase in our infection rate – today it is 60.2 cases per 100,000 population."

Wales Online has published the full letter.
