Lockdown in Scotland: Nicola Sturgeon to reveal new restrictions today

Nicola Sturgeon is due to announce new coronavirus restrictions in a statement to the Scottish Parliament this afternoon.

The First Minister is expected to set out the details of the next steps the Scottish Government will take at around 2.50pm.

She has described the situation as "the most difficult decision point we have faced so far”, but confirmed new measures will not amount to Scotland going into another lockdown as was the case in March.

The announcement will follow a cabinet meeting on this morning when details of the new restrictions will be decided.

Ms. Sturgeon has ruled out a full-scale lockdown and travel ban for Scotland.

At her daily lunchtime briefing yesterday she confirmed the stay at home message from the early days of the virus won't be repeated, and travel bans will only considered when necessary in "hot spot" areas.

Schools, Universities and the economy will not be shut down and the NHS will continue to be remobilised.

There has been speculation of further restrictions on the hospitality sector, which led to a trade body voicing deep concern on Tuesday evening.

Emma McClarkin, of the Scottish Beer & Pub Association, said: "If the Scottish Government is to implement further harsh restrictive measures to our sector, it must include a dedicated package of support alongside it.

"Without it, the Scottish Government will leave our pubs and thousands of jobs doomed to failure."

Ms. Sturgeon said: "We’re not proposing another lockdown, not even on a temporary basis.

"We’re not going to be asking you to stay inside your homes.

"We have been asking people to think about non-essential travel, we’re not about to impose travel restrictions on the whole of the country."

She said infections are beginning to spread from younger sections of the population to older age groups.

Ms Sturgeon added: "The situation is not out of control, but it is a cause of increasing concern."

In the past 24 hours a further 800 new cases have been confirmed, which is 13.2 per cent of those newly tested.

Glasgow remains at the epicentre with 303 more people infected.
