Lockdown house viewings rules and what you can and can't do when moving home

Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick today announced the new rules the public must adhere to when moving house.

The Government estimates more than 450,000 moves were put on hold as the coronavirus crisis continues but under new guidance, people are now allowed to move home.

The housing and moving market was brought to a standstill during the global outbreak, with mortgages and remortgages unable to take place as homes couldn't be valued during the crisis.

Movers who had secured a purchase or deal on a new home had to stay put as removal firms were unable work.

In today's press briefing at Downing Street, Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick announced people are now allowed to move home as long as they adhere to government guidance.

Among the changes, it was announced estate agents’ offices can reopen, house viewings are permitted, show homes can open and moving firms will be able to operate.

Mr Jenrick said though physical viewings were allowed, "viewings should happen virtually but when they do happen in person, we've set out a clear plan to ensure the safety of everybody involved.”

Home viewings will be by appointment only and open houses are not permitted, to limit the number of people entering a home at one time.

There should also be no "speculative viewings" he said - people should only arrange one if they have serious plans to buy.

All parties should follow strict social distancing guidelines during viewings and the current occupier should go out for their daily exercise while the viewing takes place.

Speculative

All the doors in a home being viewed are to be left open and once the viewing has finished, all surfaces including door handles must be cleaned.

Anyone can move home from today, May 13.
