Lockdown rule breakers ordered to go home after travelling 20 miles for fish and chips

Hungry rule breakers who drove 20 miles to a fish and chip shop were warned by police to find somewhere "more local".

Derbyshire Police officers caught the flouters in a SEAT Ibiza after they'd travelled into the country from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, over the weekend, reports NottinghamshireLive.

The sunny weather, with temperatures well into the teens, meant scores of Brits breached coronavirus rules to flock to beauty spots on Saturday and Sunday.

Currently, by law people are only allowed to leave their homes for essential reasons, and cannot mix with other households unless for emergencies or outside for daily exercise.

People can leave their local area, but only for crucial reasons such as work.

Posting about the incident on social media, officers from Matlock, Cromford, Wirksworth and Darley Dale said the journey taken was "not reasonable travel".

They sent them back to Mansfield, after urging them to find a chippy more local to their own town.

A spokesperson said: "Ibiza coming for fish and chips with friends from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. This is not reasonable travel.

"Sent back home and advised to find a chippy somewhere more local."

It comes after Derbyshire Police fined three men who live 100 miles apart for meeting at a McDonald's in Chesterfield in January.

Other incidents have included sending people from Manchester away from the Peak District and utilising drones to catch people on lockdown walks.

Government guidance on the issue states: "If you do leave home for a permitted reason, you should always stay in your local area - unless it is necessary to go further, for example to go to work.

"Staying in your local area means stay in the village, town, or part of the city where you live."

One "permitted reason" for leaving the house during lockdown is for exercise, either with your household or bubble".

However, guidance does state that people must not travel for exercise "outside your local area".
