Lockdown end date UK: This is what people in Edinburgh and the Lothians think of the debate

Strains have appeared to emerge between the Scottish and UK governments over what appear to be differing approaches to ending the lockdown.

Nicola Sturgeon said in her daily update at 12.30pm on 7 May that No. 10 had not yet shared any plans with the devolved governments about Boris Johnson's widely-reported five step plan to start easing the coronavirus lockdown in England from Monday.

In contrast, the First Minister has renewed Scotland's lockdown regulations today for up to three weeks. She also said she would rather not learn about the other UK nations' lockdown plans from the papers - referring to Mr Johnson's proposed five step plan.

This apparent divergence in approach has spilled over into social media. On May 7, the hashtag #KeepTheLockdown began trending, with people from both England and Scotland taking to Twitter to have their say on Boris Johnson's reported plans.

The five-stage plan for England as reported by The Mirror will see unlimited exercise allowed from Monday, employees encouraged to return to workplaces if they have stayed open in lockdown and are safe, and that garden centres may be reopened as well.

People in Edinburgh took to Twitter to share their concerns about England relaxing lockdown while Scotland retains it.

Iain Cameron Smith (@Morsefan248) said: #KeepTheLockdown I'm all for an easing of the measures - but lets take a cautious approach - "don't throw the baby out with the bath water".

Emily Nicholl (@emily_nicholl_) said: Do you reckon we'd be talking about #endthelockdown if @BorisJohnson was still in hospital? Just a thought. #KeepTheLockdown

Other Edinburgh residents got creative with memes:

And cartoons:

Only a handful of people from Edinburgh tweeted in support of ending the lockdown. One solitary voice said: "They want you to stay at home, by panic n fear and house arrest, throttling the economy based on wildly inaccurate projections of so called "experts" bankrolled by major pharmaceutical companies! #endthelockdown"

What do you think of the lockdown debate? Have your say in our poll below:

The next official review date will be in three weeks time on May 28. Ms Sturgeon has said some measures may be relaxed before that point if the evidence suggests it would be safe, but these are likely to be minor alterations only.
