Downing Street confirmed Mr Johnson will hold a coronavirus press conference tonight.

While the PM is yet to announced plans for England, Northern Ireland's coronavirus lockdown has been extended for a further four weeks to March 5.

Downing Street would not rule out the possibility of the lockdown continuing into the summer after Boris Johnson said it was "too early to say" when measures would be eased.

Ministers hope it will be the last national lockdown required during the pandemic.

Asked directly whether he could rule out the lockdown lasting into the summer, the Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We will continue to keep all of the scientific evidence and data under review.

"It remains our position that we want to ease restrictions as soon as it is safe to do so, but in order for us to do that we need to see the transmission rates of the virus come down and we need to see the pressure on the NHS reduce."

Environment Secretary George Eustice told Sky News lockdown would end following a mass vaccination roll out

He said: "We need everybody to play their part, to abide by the restrictions we have got in place to limit the spread of this virus.

"And, yes, that does mean we have to intervene, sometimes in quite a draconian way and issue penalties, and we make no apology for doing that because you can see the impacts of this virus spreading."

He added: "The lockdown will end once we have made further progress on rolling out the vaccines.

"Just shy of five million people have been vaccinated, as of yesterday."
