'Lock up your daughters' T-shirts slammed for teaching boys to be 'scary predators'

Slogans on children's T-shirts such as 'lock up your daughters' have been criticised for teaching boys to be 'scary predators'.

With violence against women in the spotlight following the death of Sarah Everard, campaigners say that a culture of sexism begins with gender stereotypes in childhood and it's about time that changed.

The Let Toys Be Toys campaign group used an example of a boy wearing the T-shirt in a tweet and said: "Gender stereotypes in childhood underpin a culture of sexism in which male violence, and violence against women and girls is widespread.

"What do those gender stereotypes teach children about how to be a boy or a girl?"

Adding more examples of how stereotypes are enforced among children, they shared pages of a toy catalogue showing only boys playing with Nerf blasters.

And they said that slogans on children's clothing, highlighted by campaigners and research, 'show that boys are being taught to be scary predators; girls to be decorative prey'.

They don't say where this particular T-shirt was sold, but one shopper said she'd seen the slogan on clothing from various high street stores.

The tweets attracted support, with many saying they feel the same way.

What do you think about the slogan? Do you think there are too many gender stereotypes with clothing and toys? Is it harmless? Let us know in the comments here.

"This is gross," said one. "But there will be plenty of people who think it's cute/funny/harmless fun. Even after this week's news."

While another added: "I’ve been thinking about root causes all week and this rings so true. As a parent I need to do more to empower both our kids to be whoever they want to be."
