Lochmaben man to cycle to Leeds to help fund work on football team's new home

A Lochmaben man is getting set to cycle to Leeds to help complete work on his football team’s new home.

William Howat, secretary of Lochmaben FC, will be cycling the 168 miles over two days, starting on May 31, to raise cash for the club’s pavilion.

The South of Scotland League outfit currently play home games at Lockerbie’s King Edward Park due to the ongoing construction of the building at Whitehills Park.

Engineer William said: “The boys have been playing in Lockerbie because they don’t have changing facilities at Lochmaben.

“We’ve been building the new pavilion over the last wee while and hopefully this will get us over the line. It’s really been needed for the team. The boys want to play in Lochmaben. This will give us a home.”

William will finish his cycling trip at Morely Mercantile in Leeds where he will be cheered across the line by members of the club’s committee.

The 51-year-old said: “The reason I’m going to Leeds is because we made friends with a team down there in 1985.

“I’m looking forward to it. I cycle quite a bit to work and enjoy it so it should be good. If the weather is good it should be a good couple of days.”

William is more than half way towards his £2,000 target.
