Lochmaben man getting set for cycling challenge to Ibrox to raise money for Christmas lights

A Lochmaben man is getting set to hit the road to bring some festive cheer to the Royal Burgh.

Willie Howat, who is the secretary of Lochmaben FC, will tackle a 76-mile cycle to Ibrox Stadium, the home of his beloved Rangers, in November.

The fundraising cycle is part of a wider aim by the Lochmaben Gala committee to buy new Christmas lights.

The committee took over the lights last year but some of them have stopped working and organisers want to bring some festive cheer to the area after a hard year.

Engineer Willie, 52, said: “The gala committee contacted the club about promoting their fundraiser for the Christmas lights.

“We were able to give them a small donation as well as we’re needing to watch what we do with our money just now too.

“Then I thought about doing a bike run to try and raise some more.

“So, on November 20, I’ll cycle along the old service roads from Lockerbie to Ibrox.

“I cycle 14 miles to work most days but I’ll be out in the weekends to build up. I’m hoping it will take me five or six hours to complete it.

“It’s going to be 76 miles. It was a bit of a sudden decision so if I’d thought about it before I’d have done it before November!

“But hopefully the weather is okay for it.”

Willie’s route will see him travel along the old service roads from Lockerbie up to Abington, then through Larkhall and Blantyre and on to Glasgow.

Last year Willie cycled 168 miles to Leeds in two days to raise money for a new club pavilion for Lochmaben FC.
