Loch Ness named most Instagrammable Scottish loch as top 5 revealed

Loch Ness has been named the most Instagrammable Scottish loch according to a new report, which revealed the waterways that are proving most popular with the Instagram and TikTok generation.

The research by motoring specialists Macklin Motors, looked at data from both TikTok and Instagram to find the most popular lochs from around Scotland that you can expect to be busiest when traveling around mainland Scotland this year.

Using Instagram posts and hashtags and Tiktok views associated with the famous Scottish locations, they've also come up with five hidden gems that you should check out if you're looking for a quieter more excluded spot.

1. Loch Ness, Drumnadrochit

Loch Ness came top of the most popular lochs with over 40,000 Instagram tags and nearly 2.7m views on TikTok (over twice as much as second-place Lock Lomond).

This is unsurprising, as the beautiful loch is not only surrounded by some stunning scenery but also has the added bonus of being home to the famous monster.

2. Loch Lomond, Balloch

Scotland's other famous loch takes second place on the list, beating Loch Ness on Instagram tags with 457045 but just under half the TikTok views at 1.18m.

Easily accessible from Glasgow, the loch is surrounded by incredible hillwalks and one of the country's favourite Munros in Ben Lomond.

3.Loch Fyne, Invererary

Taking the third spot was Loch Fyne, with just over 51900 tags on the popular social media site.

The stunning sea loch, which lies just off the Firth of Clyde, has been made famous thanks to its fantastic seafood and of course the nearby brewery, which creates some of Scotland's most exciting beers..

4. Loch Leven, Kinross

The stunning Loch Leven in Kinross came fourth with just over 36,000 Instagram tags. The largest natural shallow water body in lowland Britain, the loch is hugely popular with bird watchers due to its wide array of wildlife including ducks, osprey and kingfishers.

5. Loch Tay, Perth and Kinross/Stirling

This beautiful freshwater loch ranked highly with both Instagram and TikTok users and its easy to see why.

Rich in history (check out the reconstructed Iron-age crannog on the south side of the loch), it's also become popular in recent years with fans of watersports.

While those looking for a secluded spot and to avoid the crowds this summer should check out these lochs, according to the report, as they have the smallest presence on TikTok and Instagram.

1. Loch Rusky, Callander (609 Instagram tags)

2. Clatteringshaws Loch, Dumfries/Galloway (705 Instagram tags)

3. Loch Ericht, Perth/Kinross (874 Instagram tags)

4. Loch Shin, Lairg (1079 Instagram tags)

5. Loch Fleet, Golspie/Dornoch (1302 Instagram tags)
