Loch Ness Monster spotted at Lake Macquarie

Mythical Creature: A sighting of a different kind of monster in Lake Macquarie. Picture: Sharyn Swan

Is it the Loch Ness Monster?

Or, as Warners Bay's Sharyn Swan dubbed it, the "Lake Ness Monster".

Sharyn took this photo of the monster while on the walking path at Warners Bay.

Witnesses saw the monster chasing a great white shark. [Yes, that's a joke]

Sharyn said the late afternoon light transformed a tree log into "our own Lake Ness".

A Boy Named Kalyn

Parents Kenny and Jackkie talking to Kalyn Ponga on Facetime about their son.

Knights star Kalyn Ponga has made a heartwarming video call to the parents of a boy named Kalyn.

"Seven weeks ago, Jackkie and Kenny welcomed a beautiful but premature boy into the world," a video posted on the Knights Facebook page said.

"And they named their son Kalyn after Kalyn Ponga. Born after 28 weeks, Kalyn has been staying in the neonatal intensive care unit.

"John Hunter Children's Hospital arranged for Kalyn Ponga to Facetime them under the guise of an educational seminar call."

Kalyn Ponga looked humbled by the naming.

"I just want to say congratulations. I don't know how to feel, I don't know whether I'm lucky or ..." he said, his voice trailing off.

"It's pretty special that you named your little boy after me."

The Knights star asked whether they used the same spelling. They did.

"I feel pretty lucky. I hope he's healthy," he said.

The video is a bit of a tear-jerker, especially the picture of the tiny baby in the crib and dad Kenny's emotions after he finished the video call.

"That was unreal, that was awesome," Kenny said.

The family has been told that little Kalyn will be able to go home in the coming weeks.

Virus Test

Newcastle Herald wine writer John Lewis tells Topics that his daughter-in-law sent him this.

"A new and easy test for the horror of COVID-19 is making the rounds. It's simple, quick and positive - or negative if you see what I mean.

"Take a glass and pour a decent amount of your favourite wine into it. Then see if you can smell it. If you can, then you are halfway there.

"Now drink it. If you can taste it, then it is reasonable to assume you are currently free of the virus because the loss of the sense of smell and taste is a common symptom.

"I tested myself seven times last night and was virus-free every time, thank goodness.

"However I will have to test myself again today because I have developed a throbbing headache, which can also be one of the symptoms."
