Loch Ness Monster named UK's most popular legend as thousands search for creature

The popularity of the mystery of the Loch Ness Monster is showing no signs of slowing - with 14 sightings so far in 2021 already.

The mysterious creature which is said to lurk beneath the waves of Loch Ness sees thousands of visitors flock to the loch each year to try to catch a glimpse and regularly makes headlines all around the world.

It'll probably come as no surprise then, that Nessie has topped the list of the UK's most searched-for myths and legends, with only Robin Hood being able to match the loch monster's appeal.

The research by holiday accommodation site Cottages and Castles showed that legendary Scottish creatures like the Kelpies and Selkies were also hugely popular with Google users.

The popular Scottish holiday lettings firm’s study of commonly researched myths and legends on the search engine Google looked at over 100 myths and legends from Britain's rich history to see which ones had the highest search volume.

It found that Nessie attracted over 60,500 average searches per month.

And globally, the Loch Ness Monster attracted nearly 300,000 searches over the same period.

The Top Ten UK Myths and Legends:

Loch Ness Monster (Scotland) - 60,500

Robin Hood (Nottingham) - 60,500

Kelpies (Scotland) - 40,500

King Arthur (England) - 40,500

Green Man (Devon/Somerset)- 18,100

Lady Godiva (Coventry) - 14,800

Selkies (Scotland) - 8,100

Redcaps (Scotland) - 8,100

Lady of the Lake (Wales) - 8,100

Cerne Abbas Giant (Dorset) - 6,600
