Loch Lomond nudist club sees huge rise in membership requests out of lockdown

A nudist club based in Loch Lomond has seen a huge rise in membership requests after Scotland emerged from the coronavirus lockdown.

The Scottish Outdoor Club, which meets on Inchmurrin Island in the middle of Loch Lomond, says they have seen a growth in the number of people wanting to join recently - including families.

The secluded club opened its doors to members of the public for the first time back in 2018 as part of its 80th anniversary celebrations - at a time when it only boasted 10 members.

But now they credit the coronavirus pandemic with a resurgence in interest to join their ranks - despite summer coming to an end.

Paul Birchall, who helps run the group, told the Sunday Mail: "It’s only in the last month we’ve been able to get back to Inchmurrin.

“We’d usually be there from the spring but spent that time keeping our wee island habitable.

“However, we’ve seen a growth in inquiries to join us and there’s already been new people coming, including families.

"They include a woman who was last a member 30 years ago. She’s now come back with her daughter. It’s great to see.

“I have no doubt it’s linked to coronavirus. People were spending a lot of time at home during lockdown. And I think a lot of them spent that time naked. It’s only natural that would be carried over."

At one point in time, the nudist colony, which boasts an 11-acre camp on the island that includes a tennis court and a sauna, had around 30 families using 30 chalets before a decline in numbers.

The club is Scotland’s oldest naturist organisation, having been established on Fenwick Moor in Ayrshire before moving to Loch Lomond in the late 1940s.

They share the island with a hotel and a farm but lease their own remote section, which they access via a ferry from Balmaha, from April to September.
