Locals wishes answered as council land to be sold for affordable homes in Irlam

Salford council are to sell a piece of land for affordable houses to be built on for £690,000.

The move comes amidst concerns that housing developments are creeping in on the area of Chat Moss.

The plot of land in Irlam was once home to a council office buildings and was cleared in 2017 due to the poor condition of the buildings and issues with anti-social behaviour.

It has been up for sale since 2013 and pending planning approval, the brownfield land should be sold to housing developers Seddon Homes who are working with Great Places Housing Association.

Salford City Mayor Paul Dennet said: "It is about time this derelict, brown-field land was brought back into use and these proposals for affordable homes is great news for the city."

In total 27 affordable homes are to be built on the site, with six affordable homes to buy, six for rent, ten for shared ownership and another five for to be bought or rented through the council's brand new social housing company Dérive.

Dérive are a development company owned by Salford City Council and they aim to increase the number of affordable homes in the city and provide quality and sustainable homes in the neighbourhoods.

Lead Member for Housing and Neighbourhoods at Salford City Council, Tracy Kelly, said: "In Salford we have 6,280 households on the housing waiting list, 191 people in statutory temporary accommodation and 115 in A Bed Every Night accommodation.

"That is against a 12% drop in the number of developers starting on site to build affordable homes last year.

"We must continue to do all we can to help provide homes for people in this city."
