Locals welcome plans to turn 'tired' and 'run down' Nottingham office building into flats

Plans to turn a 'tired' and 'run down' office building into flats on Maid Marian Way has been welcomed by locals after planning permission was given the green light by the City Council.

Castle Heights, opposite Ye Olde Salutation Inn, had previously been the base for tenants including the Royal College of Nursing and Fraser Brown Solicitors, but the 11-storey building will soon be home to apartments.

The flats will be built on every floor, and will be split between either one or two bedrooms, with all apartments including living and kitchen areas, bathrooms and large window spaces.

The planning application documents were submitted on behalf of BSP Holdings, a Nottingham-based company located within the Castle Heights development.

And the plans have mostly been well received by locals.

Ryan McGrath, 31, who works in property development and lives in The Park, said: "It does look tired and run down - with the right redevelopment, it could be a much more attractive building.

"Anything which gets more people into the city centre is a good thing in my opinion as it benefits everyone - more people in the city will benefit more traders and it's in need of renovation anyway.

"There's a shortage of homes in Nottingham, so it will assist with that issue and take the pressure off."

Tom Payne, 25, from the city centre, said: "I'd rather see it being fully used - I'd be all for it."

Joseph, 24, from Sneinton, said: "It's a fine idea as I personally found good accommodation to live in really hard - it's beneficial for most people."

One person, who wished to remain anonymous, said she still worked in the building.

She said: "There's all this student accommodation around and luxury flats but it does not feel like it's for real people living here in Nottingham.

"It will cost them a bomb to renovate - it would have to be because the windows need replacing for a start."
