Locals tell of heartbreak as toddler who died in 'paddling pool' incident in Roscommon named locally

Locals have expressed their heartache at the death of a toddler in Co Roscommon following a drowning accident this week.

The tragic incident happened on Monday afternoon in Tulsk.

The 22-month old child, named locally as Daithi O'Grady was transferred to University College Hospital Galway by air ambulance after Gardai were alerted to the incident.

He was later brought to Temple Street Children's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Speaking about the incident Fr Micheal Donnelly who knows the family of the boy well told of how the community had been left 'numb'.

He told Shannonside FM: "Shock doesn’t even describe it,”.

"Shock wouldn’t come anywhere near it. The place is numb.

“I was in the local school this morning; the kids are numb. I just left the family, and they are numb.

“The whole area you can get a sense of down, lack of life. There are no words you can say. That’s the big thing for a lot of the people – there are no words you can say to comfort them at this time.”

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí were alerted to incident of a male toddler in a serious condition at his home in Tulsk, Co. Roscommon on Monday 7th June, 2021.

"Gardaí and paramedics treated the toddler at the scene and he was taken to University College Hospital Galway by air ambulance. The toddler was later transferred to Temple Street Children's Hospital where his condition was critical.

"Gardaí have been informed that the male toddler died at Temple Street Children's Hospital on Thursday June 10, 2021.

"A file will now be prepared for the county coroner."
