Residents have rallied together to help a man whose caravan was trashed by mindless vandals last week.
Lesmahagow resident Peter Sleath was out working when a group of youths targeted his home within the ground of Birkwood Castle, smashing its windows and destroying the inside beyond repair.
A number of personal items were also stolen as police appeal for information on the thieves believed to be aged 12-16.
The incident took place on March 17.
Almost £7000 has been raised on a gofundme as Peter’s community rallied to help restore or replace his home.
Laura Duddy, who began the fundraising, posted on the page: “Peter who has lived in his home in the area of Lesmahagow within the grounds of Birkwood Castle has now been subjected to the devastation of his caravan, his home being vandalised causing total damage and destruction to his property and belongings when Peter was working.
“As a community of Lesmahagow and surrounding areas many people are willing to support and help this gentleman rebuild and restore his home. This gofundme will contribute towards this cause.”
After the success of the fundraiser, Laura told how Peter was “truly overwhelmed” with the community’s generosity.

Meanwhile, Lanarkshire Police continue to investigate the incident.
A police spokesperson said: “We are appealing for information in relation to an incident on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 whereby a residential caravan located to the rear of the abandoned Birkwood castle (Old Birkwood Hospital complex) in Lesmahagow was vandalised by a group of youths described as being between the ages of 12 and 16.
“The caravan’s owner was away during this incident.
“All the windows of the caravan were smashed, the inside destroyed and the caravan is now beyond repair and personal items belonging to the owner have also been taken.
“Police are appealing for any witnesses who could assist in identifying those responsible.”
