Locals praised as heroes after bravely rescuing man from freezing Irish river

Two young men are being hailed for their brave actions after they rescued another man from an Irish river.

The alarm was raised at around midday on Wednesday in Carrick-On-Shannon, Co Leitrim.

A man was seen entering the River Shannon by passersby who quickly contacted the emergency services.

It is understood an initial attempt by members of the public to save the man using a lifebuoy was unsuccessful.

The rescuer swam to save the man, but began to suffer a cramp from the freezing cold water, the Leitrim Observer reports.

Two men from a local business quickly intervened and managed to pull both men from the river.

Gardai, a rescue helicopter and emergency services all attended the scene, and the rescued man was taken to hospital.

However, he is not believed to have suffered significant injuries.

The men who bravely entered the river as part of the rescue efforts are being praised for their quick actions.

One person said: "Well done to all the brave people risking their own lives as well."

A second said: "I pray God will bless these brave people risking their own lives to save this man."

A third added: "Well done to these brave people, hope all will be well with the man in hospital."

Another stated: "Well done to all, great people out there."
