Locals left puzzled after four mystery jets fly over Edinburgh city centre

An Edinburgh Live reader has been in touch to share a puzzling photograph of four jet vapour trails left in the sky after planes flew over the city centre this evening (29 September).

It's a bit of a mystery as to what these planes were up to, as they don't appear to show up on today's 'notice to airmen' ( NOTAM ) list - official notices filed with an aviation authority to alert aircraft pilots of potential hazards

One Edinburgh Live reader, Konrad Krawiec, took a snap of the trails left after the unexpected flypast this evening at about 6pm.

He sent his photograph on to us, quizzing us as to why the aircraft might be flying low over the city on a sunny, bright September evening.

It's possible that they were US jets on their way back to an RAF base after a training sortie, but that's not yet been clarified.

On less clear days, it's not as easy to see jets like this due to cloud cover - they often fly at a level unlikely to leave contrails like the ones seen.

We'll keep trying to crack the mystery ourselves, but if you have any information about this unusual plane sighting please drop us a line at news@edinburghlive.co.uk.
