Locals left confused as mysterious new mast appears on streets of Portobello

Locals were left confused in recent weeks after an unexplained mast appeared in Portobello.

Jenny Hunt took to Facebook to ask about the mast which appeared at the Portobello Road.

Others were quick to explain it was actually a 5G mast, one of many being installed across the UK to prepare for the roll out of high speed internet.

The roll out promises to end lagging and connection interruptions, with high speed internet available even in busy areas.

Local Johnny Rhodes was glad to see the mast, writing on Facebook: "Awesome! fast internet coming to portobello great for businesses and people."

But the new masts haven't been without controversy, with several reports of conspiracy theorists vandalising the masts or trying to burn them down.

The rollout of 5G has been incorrectly linked to coronavirus, including debunked claims that it actually reduces our immune defence to the virus.

The government was forced to release a guide on the new technology in an effort to debunk the conspiracies.

5G Mobile Technology: A Guide can be made available to members of the public who are concerned about the roll out of the tech in their community.

"Companies have been rolling out 5G in the UK since 2019.

"However, some people have raised concerns that the introduction of 5G could affect people's health and have even linked it to the coronavirus pandemic.

"These claims are completely unfounded and should not be used as a basis to block or delay 5G rollout," the guide says.
