Locals invited to sign books of condolence for the Queen set up at various locations as Lanarkshire Provost first to pay respects

Books of condolence have been placed at various locations around South Lanarkshire, inviting locals to pay their respects to the Queen following her death.

Provost Margaret Cooper was the first person to sign one of the books set up following the passing of the 96-year-old monarch on Thursday, September 8.

After passing on her words of condolence at the council HQ in Hamilton, Ms Cooper paid tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II.

She said: “It was very humbling to be the first person to sign the book, and although my message was personal, I also signed on behalf of the people of South Lanarkshire and for anyone who for any reason cannot sign one of the books themselves.

“Her Majesty The Queen was by the country’s side through some of our brightest and darkest days, and always did so with a dedication and love for her people.

“Although this is of course a very sad period, it should also be a period for reflection and admiration for someone who was so loved by so many.”

Other books of condolence have been set up at Cambuslang, Carluke, East Kilbride, Lanark, Hamilton and Rutherglen.

And South Lanarkshire Council Leader Joe Fagan also signed the book in Hamilton, as members of the public are welcome to attend a number of locations to pay their respects.

The books are available now and staff will be on hand to direct people to them.

Anyone who cannot go to one of these locations may want to sign the official online condolence book on the Royal website.

Residents who wish to place floral tributes can do so in the open space at the flagpoles in front of the council’s HQ Almada Street, Hamilton.

Anyone who cannot use that space may want to consider somewhere appropriate nearby, such as their local war memorial.
