Locals 'gutted' after Barton Hill pub The Swan closes permanently

A neighbourhood pub in Barton Hill has closed permanently.

The Swan, located on the corner of Morley Street and Bright Street, was a popular meeting place for locals who loved its rough-and-ready approach and friendly atmosphere.

But it has reportedly been purchased by Barton Hill's community centre, The Settlement, which is located next door to it.

Bristol Live has asked The Settlement if this is the case and is awaiting a response.

The closure means The Rhubarb Tavern on Queen Ann Road is the only remaining pub in the area, following the departure of the Lord Nelson some years ago.

News that The Swan will not be reopening after lockdown measures are lifted was confirmed on its Facebook page, in a post that reads: "It's quite sad really last pub on Barton Hill is now officially closed."

Speaking to Bristol Live, a former member of staff named Kim said: "It's the end of an era, it was the last community social gathering place in Barton Hill.

"I don't know what the plans are for the building but I think the community should have been asked to see what they would like to have.

"Residents weren't asked for their opinion."

People have expressed shock and sadness at the pub's closure on social media, with many saying they are "gutted" to hear the news.

One local wrote: "I'm absolutely gutted. I'm gonna miss seeing you all. There's never gonna be another swan."

Another added: "Everything is now history to do with Barton hill, it’s so sad. So much life went on in Barton hill now there’s nothing left."

Barton Hill Settlement, a community resource centre for the people of Barton Hill and surrounding area, was set up in 1911.

In February it merged with the Wellspring Healthy Living Centre to become Wellspring Settlement.
