Locals furious after another Post Office closure announced in West Lothian

Furious residents have hit out at the news that their local Post Office is to shut down.

Locals were informed by post yesterday that the sub Post Office would close as part of a redevelopment plan in Blackburn.

An online community page confirmed the news last night and locals replied showing their frustrations.

The Mill Centre is to be partly demolished with flats and a new retail unit created but it was hoped that the Post Office would be saved.

One resident said: “This the only place I get my gas from, I have a young child and don’t drive.

“Life’s hard but if I can’t get gas in Blackburn I will need travel to the next town in the rain and snow with a buggy.”

Another added: “That’s awful, what about elderly people and disable people?

“They rely on this. The local authority need to prevent this happening.”

A protest has been organised this Saturday to try and save the Mill Centre.

The Courier reported last year that the Post Office had shut temporarily in Blackburn.

However, the developers had indicated that it would be saved as part of the redevelopment process.

Futures Group ( BFG), led by the community council has been working on proposals for economic development in the village.

In a report to a meeting of the Whitburn and Blackburn Local Area Committee last year, local regeneration officer, Michelle Kirkbright, said: “The subgroup have made great efforts to work in partnership with the owner of the Mill centre, the council and local community to achieve the aim of retaining the services that the community have identified as much needed assets for the area and will continue to provide updates to the BFG and the wider community.”
