Locals fear 'Harry Potter train' could spread virus when Highland line reopens

Villagers fear the return of the “Harry Potter train” could spread Covid-19 in their community.

The Jacobite steam train excursions, which go from Fort William to Mallaig and back over the Glenfinnan Viaduct, are set to resume on July 15 with up to 300 passengers, who will have to wear masks.

Operator West Coast Railways (WCR) said it is putting in place safety measures.

But Councillor Denis Rixson, who lives in Mallaig, said WCR needed to give more details to reassure the public.

He said: “You will be able to alight in Arisaig and when you get to Mallaig you have an hour-and-a-half to walk around. What if it’s bucketing down?”

Resident Stuart Griffin said: “The shop and cafes will not be offering full service and there’s no outside places for people to shelter, so we are concerned about the potential spread of Covid.”

WCR said it is working with Transport Scotland to introduce safety measures on the train and at the stations.

A spokesman added: “We are confident they will minimise any risk without impinging on people’s enjoyment of what is regarded as one of the most spectacular railway journeys in the world.”
