Locals checked by armed gardai and detectives at cross border checkpoints

Armed gardai were part of a number of checkpoints at the border with Northern Ireland in Donegal on Thursday.

Detectives, armed members of the force and uniform officers were manning checkpoints in Buncrana as part of a crime prevention operation this week.

Cars were being stopped and in some cases questioned by the officials with no offences found during the day.

A garda spokesperson said: "Buncrana Roads Policing Unit were accompanied by local Detectives and armed members from Garda Specialist Units as they conducted cross border checkpoints in conjunction with the PSNI yesterday evening. These crime prevention checkpoints took place at border crossings into Northern Ireland. No offences were disclosed."
