Local volunteers work their magic to transform woodland

A group of community activists have put a grant to good use by transforming Castlemilk Park.

Cassiltoun Housing Association received a £3000 Community Active Travel Grant to further develop its improvement work in Castlemilk Park.

Alongside new signage highlighting travel routes, the outlook of the area has also been improved to give visitors a nicer area to explore since they received the grant from Paths for All.

Stuart Whittaker, community woodland officer at Cassiltoun Housing Association, said: “Upgrading the woodland has seen its challenges, especially during the lockdown as we have had to work differently due to the restrictions.”

Castlemilk Park Volunteers, formed in 2018, currently has 25 to 30 volunteers.

Some of their projects have included planting a tree in November for COP26 and they have been invited by Glasgow Ramblers to present information about their efforts in the park.

The £3000 Community Active Travel Grant, supported by Transport Scotland, was to help the volunteers further develop their improvement work in the community.

The park has also received help from Paths for All.

Rona Gibb, senior manager at Paths for All, said: “With walking being one of few reasons for leaving our homes over the past year, it has shown how important it is to have access to nice outdoor spaces and routes.

“The work ongoing in communities across the country has far more than local value – it has a big impact on improving the physical, mental and social health of society.

“Having safe and accessible local greenspace is so central when it comes to keeping us active and connecting with nature and our community.

“The work of volunteers improving their local path network is invaluable, and is fundamental to encouraging more people to walk every day and everywhere.”

More information on the park and its ongoing projects can be found via their website.
