Local tourism leaders take their case to Frankfort

Representatives from local tourism agencies and businesses are making their case in Frankfort this week. These tourism officials have been meeting with lawmakers. Hank Phillips is CEO of the Kentucky Travel Industry Association. He said the K-T-I-A, with some 500 organizations, is supportive of expanded gambling through sports wagering and free-standing casinos.

“Those things are legal and are drawing money into other states and out of Kentucky and those states are benefitting and they’re managing and regulating those things effectively and properly,” said Phillips.

Phillips admits sports wagering stands a better chance of passing than any casino legislation this session. He said Kentucky tourism is benefiting from a $75 million dollar state appropriation of federal COVID recovery dollars. Phillips adds, the money is just now getting into the hands of local tourism agencies. Phillips said that carries a long-term impact.

“The investment of these funds will elevate the profile of Kentucky and in the heated competition among states, to draw in conventions, draw in visitors,” said Phillips.

Phillips noted there are concerns within his association as to how legislation related to LGBTQ individuals could impact visitation. The K-T-I-A CEO added about 500 organizations comprise the association. In addition to local tourism commissions, conventions, and visitors' bureaus; other members include tourist attractions, motels, marinas, and other visitor-focused businesses.
