Local residents fume over pavement 'obstacle course' on Edinburgh streets

Local residents have called for roadworks signage around the Newington area to be moved after it blocked access to the pavement.

This morning, one local contacted the council after asking how pedestrians, wheelchair users and people with pushchairs could safely use the pavement with large signage and blockages on it.

Images show the pavements on Queen's Crescent and Peel Terrace covered in roadsigns and cones, making it impossible for someone to pass in a wheelchair or even walking without having to step out onto the road.

The resident also asked how social distancing would be possible with the pavements so full of road signs, describing it as a "pavement obstacle course".

Shortly after images were posted on Twitter, the council replied to confirm they had contacted the roads team covering the area to move the signage to a more suitable location.

Over the last few weeks, the City of Edinburgh Council have closed a number of roads and widened pavements throughout different areas of the city to allow for safe travel and social distancing.

During lockdown, the council were awarded £5 million funding to make temporary changes on roads and pavements to allow for safe social distancing.

Temporary changes have been introduced, with roads such as Cockburn and Victoria Street closed off to traffic last weekend.

Silverknowes Road, Braid Road and Links Gardens have also been shut for the same reasons.
