Local non-league games cancelled simultaneously due to 'unforeseen and tragic' circumstances

Two non-league matches just over the border in Derbyshire have been postponed due to 'unforeseen and tragic' circumstances.

Alfreton Town confirmed on Saturday afternoon that their National League North home clash with Gateshead at the Impact Arena had been postponed, around 90 minutes before kick-off.

The club announced they would be issuing a statement in due course and this was followed up in comments made by chairman Wayne Bradley on social media.

“Apologies to all who have travelled to support at this game @GatesheadFC and @AlfretonTownFC," Bradley said.

“Details of the circumstances will be released in due course. Life has an ability to throw up many tests........ it is just not a day to attempt to play football.

"Sorry everyone," he added.

Shortly afterwards, nearby Matlock Town confirmed on Twitter that their local derby at Mickleover Sports in the BetVictor Northern Premier Division was also off - citing a very similar explanation.

Alfreton currently sit 15th in the National League North table, with Gateshead in eighth just outside the play-off places.

Mickleover Sports play their home matches just over 16 miles away and were due to face local rivals Matlock in a derby match on Saturday.

The Reds' Impact Arena has been used by Nottingham Forest for last two season as the base for their Under-23 home games in both league and cup.
