Local MSP Neil Findlay backs strike action at West Lothian College

MSP Neil Findlay is backing industrial action staff from West Lothian College.

Members of the EIS-FELA trade union at West Lothian College have opted for short strike action over attempts to introduce instructor/assessors rather than college lecturers.

The ballot, which had 67 per cent turnout, resulted in 87 per cent of those who participated opting for strike action to be taken.

This move will result in new roles that are lower paid, with more class contact hours, less time for preparation and reduced annual leave. Fundamentally, it will degrade staff’s conditions and undermine the professionalism of lecturers.

Labour MSP, Neil Findlay MSP said: “This move by West Lothian College is being repeated across Scotland, it is a backward step and I am absolutely in support of EIS members taking action to defend their livelihood. This will devalue the work of dedicated lecturers, at the same time leaving them with less pay and more working more hours.

“The college must do the right thing and re-think this move urgently.”
