It seems like Perplexity’s recently announced Comet browser is getting a local Model Context Protocol (MCPs). The feature was first spotted by Testing Catalog in development builds and is expected to expand Comet’s ability to connect not just with remote MCPs but also with a user’s local desktop environment.
At the moment, Comet is capable of managing browser-based automation via remote MCPs. But now, by adding local MCP support, it will be able to access files, folders, and even desktop applications in response to natural language requests.

Obviously, the feature is not live yet. But since it has appeared in the test builds, it indicates that the launch is imminent. Once available, local MCPs could allow you to perform tasks like opening a document on your desktop or moving files without leaving the browser interface.
This update comes amid a busy stretch for Perplexity. The other day, the company introduced Perplexity for Government, which is a version of its AI platform especially designed for federal employees. The initiative is said to meet growing demand from agencies under pressure to adopt AI tools following executive directives like the Office of Management and Budget’s AI Action Plan.
Despite its constant push with the new features, lots of collaboration, and whatnot, the platform is still stuck at the number 2 when it comes to the AI Chatbot market share in the world. And the first spot is still occupied by the mighty ChatGPT. Plus, the gap between the first and second spot is huge. According to the latest report from StatCounter, ChatGPT has around 80% market share, while Perplexity is playing with around 8%.
So, at the moment, ChatGPT is clearly winning this race. But how the Perplexity with all these new additions will challenge the number one contender remains to be seen. Until then, if you want to stay updated with all the latest AI news, then join us on WhatsApp.
