Local man braves icy West Lothian reservoir waters for 'invigorating' dip

Not everyone looked out their window this morning glad that working from home meant they didn't have to brave the cold.

One wild swimmer took the opportunity to get out and go for a dip in the icy waters.

Brave John Keogh, 60, spent five minutes in icy waters in Harperrig Reservoir in West Lothian, the lowest temperatures he has ever been for a swim in.

Despite an air temperature of 2C, John said he found the experience 'invigorating'.

The grandfather-of-three took up wild swimming after he retired from his job as an engineer in September.

"It was really invigorating, I enjoyed it - it's the coldest I've been in, there was ice going in.

"I started off with cold showers in the morning to prepare myself.

"It's fantastic, it is so invigorating but that's the first time I have been in icy water with snow and ice.

"I can't describe how good I feel - today I was in for about five minutes, I didn't have a wetsuit on.

"I always make sure I'm not out of my depth, and I don't go in for longer than 15 minutes.

"It starts to get too dangerous.

"This is what I've wanted to do since I retired in September.

"I thought 'I'm going to do something' and I started taking cold showers.

"The benefits are great, I have suffered from a sore back for a while and it's helping that.

"I'm more relaxed as well, I feel better in myself," John said.

Father-of-three John is a member of West Lothian Dippers and his three little grandchildren are keen to accompany him one day.

John, from Uphill, near Broxburn, West Lothian, added: "They think it's fantastic. They think their granddad's great.

"They want to come out with me at some stage."
