Local lockdown imposed in Aberdeen after huge spike in Covid-19 cases

PUBS and cafes in Aberdeen have been ordered to close following a large spike in coronavirus cases.

Nicola Sturgeon announced that travel restrictions are now in place for the after 54 cases were linked to an outbreak.

The development comes just a couple of weeks after the First Minister said there were no plans for a local lockdown in Lanarkshire following a coronavirus outbreak at the Sitel call centre at Eurocentral.

Aberdeen residents woke up this morning to being back in lockdown as the first local crackdown is implemented in Scotland.

Bars, cafes and restaurants in the city have shut for at least seven days and more than 228,000 residents were told they can't enter each other's homes or travel further than five miles.

Following the outbreak at the Sitel call centre last month, where staff members were advised to isolate for 14 days and take a Covid-19 test, Ms Sturgeon said: Our indication is that the health protection approach and Test and Protect is working to contain this outbreak at the moment.

“Should that change we will consider if other action is necessary, but at this stage the work that’s been done locally to keep this under control is being effective.

“Therefore, at this stage we’re not considering a local lockdown or imposing any other restrictions on Lanarkshire that we wouldn’t be imposing on any other part of the country.

"The other point to make about the nature of this call centre is that many of the people who work in it don’t live in Lanarkshire.

“Many of them have travelled to work from other areas so it’s not quite as simple, even if we thought it was necessary, as just having a local lockdown – but at the moment we don’t think that is necessary.”

Symptoms of coronavirus...

The symptoms of coronavirus are:

  • a cough
  • a high temperature
  • shortness of breath
  • a loss of taste and smell

But these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness.

The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu.

How to avoid catching or spreading coronavirus...

  • wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds
  • always wash your hands when you get home or into work
  • use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available
  • cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze
  • put used tissues in the bin straight away and wash your hands afterwards
  • try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell
  • do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

If you think you may have the coronavirus, do not go to a GP surgery, pharmacy or hospital. Call 111 if you need to speak to someone.
